Mahomet II came to the Turkish throne in 1451, and he swore to capture Constantinople. He trained an Army of fighters called janissaries, and engaged a Hungarian engineer to cast the world’s largest guns. In April 1453, his Army was finally ready to attack. The guns began to fire continuously for six weeks. The Army in Constantinople put up a brave front, but it was certain from the beginning that they would be defeated. On May 29, the city fell.
